Microsoft’s Stephen Toulouse may be known as the man with the Xbox Live banhammer, or the keeper of Live’s big book of naughty words, but there’s a lot more to what he does than that.

One Shots: Steampunk style

Published by admin under 64745

We recently asked if anyone would like to send in some non-glitch Warhammer Online shots for One Shots. Hearing the call, our regular Massively reader, KingGrowl, was so kind as to send us this spectacular image! Now that’s what we call cool – a great big steampunk airship. He writes in to tell us a bit more about it: [This is] from the new Public quest in Altdorf for the Land of the Dead expansion. [It is] a shot of the airship you must repair. Yes, please. More gorgeous sights like this, Mythic!

If you’d like to send in some non-glitch Warhammer Online shots of your own, we’re always glad to see them. Of course, if you’re not playing Warhammer Online, we want to hear from you too! Just send them to us at oneshots AT massively DOT com – and be sure to include your name, the name of the game, and a quick description. We’ll post is out here for everyone to check out.

Metalocalypse: Dethgame Announced

Published by admin under 64934

Dethklok
So, who was expecting this? The game was supposed to be announced at the San Diego Comic Con, but slipped through a couple days early. For those of you who’ve never heard of or seen the show, it airs on Cartoon Network, during it’s Adult Swim lineup. The premise of the show is about the death metal band Dethklok. They are extremely famous, their shows are brutal, and their fans would do the craziest things to see them.

The show depicts lots of death sequences, from hot coffee pouring onto a crowd, and melting the skin off their faces and stuff to raising a death troll that destroys an entire village. I’d say there’s really not one show when there aren’t at least 100 people dying, and it’s only about a 13 minute run time (season 3 will have half-hour shows supposedly). Anyway, not much has been revealed about the game, besides it being developed by Konami and will be released on both the PlayStation Store and XBox Live marketplace. Here’s a clip from one of the shows, a promo for Duncan Hills coffee:

The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition is a tough one to review. It’s not really fair to review the game, is it? That’s not fair. The game’s 19 years old, and is one of the best ever made.

Diablo Creator Heading Up Marvel Universe MMO

Published by admin under 64896

David Brevik, one of the original creators of the Diablo games, will be heading up development for Marvel’s new massively multiplayer online game, publisher Gazillion announced Tuesday.

Brevik, the former president of defunct studio Blizzard North and lead designer of Diablo and Diablo II, has joined Gazillion-owned developer Gargantuan as studio director. Brevik was also a director at another recently-defunct studio: Flagship, makers of the doomed post-apocalyptic action RPG Hellgate: London.

Brevik isn’t the only Blizzard North and Flagship alum to trade in hellspawn for superheroes. Bill Roper, Brevik’s former colleague at both Blizzard North and Flagship, is working on Champions Online as a design director at Atari-owned Cryptic Studios.

But the web gets even more tangled: Champions Online was formerly Marvel Universe Online, to be published by Microsoft Game Studios, until it was canceled in early 2008. Shortly after the Marvel game’s cancellation, Cryptic announced Champions Online based on the HERO pen-and-paper RPG system.

Then, in March, Gazillion Entertainment resurrected the Marvel MMO concept, signing an exclusive 10-year deal to create MMO games with the comic book publisher.

There’s currently no release date set for the Marvel MMO, though Brevik may share more details about the game in a panel called “The State of MMOs: A Discussion with the Developer” at this week’s Comic-Con.

Cryptic’s Champions Online is slated for a September release.

Oh, and don’t forget that DC Universe Online, developed and published by Sony Online Entertainment, is also on the way next year. DC will be sharing news about its MMO at its own Comic-Con panel.

It seems like superhero MMOs, like superheroes themselves, just can’t be killed… not permanently, anyway.

Preparing for beta: A video tour of Hi-Rez Studios

Published by admin under 64747

Last week, we made the trek down to Hi-Rez Studios in Atlanta, Georgia to get a look at how Global Agenda is shaping up just before the closed beta goes live. As you may remember, we were one of the first MMO news sites to visit the studio in October of last year, and we’re happy to see the popularity that the game has enjoyed since then.

In the video embedded just after the jump, you’ll see a bit of the inner-workings of the studio, as well as a few interviews with members of the Hi-Rez team, asking the question, “How are you preparing for the closed beta?”

Hands On: Learning to Harmonize in Beatles Rock Band

How are you going to pull off all of those crazy Beatles harmonies when The Beatles: Rock Band releases on September 9? Don’t worry: Harmonix will help.

Harmonix stopped by the Wired.com office earlier this month to show us the latest build of Beatles, which includes 15 new songs (listed below). They also showed us a few awesome new features, one of which we can talk about today: the vocal harmony trainer. When you use this, you’ll be able to select which of the three voices you’d like to learn, and when the song plays, you’ll hear a clearly audible synthesizer note playing over the music corresponding to the specific harmony part you want to listen to.

This is much, much easier than sitting there listening to all three voices, attempting to pick out each one. Just like in Rock Band’s traditional training modes, you can pick out parts of a song, practicing them over and over again until you get it right. You’ll be doing the wee-ooh-oohs in “Back in the U.S.S.R.” in no time flat.

One of the new songs that we played was “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band/With a Little Help From My Friends.” Yes, that’s right: it’s a medley of the two tracks. Harmonix said you can’t sing them separately, which I think is a misstep: I can see a lot of people wanting to sing “With A Little Help,” which is a mellow, laid-back song, without first having to scream their way through the ungodly high parts of “Sgt. Pepper.”

Harmonix reps said at the demo that the same thing would apply to the downloadable Abbey Road album — the B-side of the album would be a medley track. (Hey, that’s just what I asked for!)

A new trailer for Beatles: Rock Band, released Tuesday, is below.

New Songs/Venues:

  • Twist And Shout / Cavern Club
  • Do You Want To Know A Secret / Cavern Club
  • Can’t Buy Me Love / Ed Sullivan Theater
  • I Wanna Be Your Man / Ed Sullivan Theater
  • Eight Days A Week / Shea Stadium
  • Paperback Writer / Budokan
  • And Your Bird Can Sing / Budokan
  • Yellow Submarine / Abbey Road Dreamscape
  • Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band* / Abbey Road Dreamscape
  • With a Little Help from My Friends* / Abbey Road Dreamscape
  • Within You Without You / Tomorrow Never Knows / Abbey Road Dreamscape
  • Revolution / Abbey Road Dreamscape
  • Birthday / Abbey Road Dreamscape
  • Dig A Pony / Rooftop Concert
  • I’ve Got A Feeling / Rooftop Concert
