Geohot (Original Iphone Hacker) Claims to Have Hacked the PS3

Very interesting to see where this goes but the hack seems to be extremely impractictle. As of right now he still can not play games from what I understand, but he is further then anyone before him. He is a very trustworthy hacker (oxymoron?), so he is most likely telling the truth.

This could lead to custom firmwares and emulators without linux in the future, but I don’t see any future for burned blu-ray games. Its highly impractical even with above average technical knowledge.

I have read/write access to the entire system memory, and HV level access to the processor. In other words, I have hacked the PS3. The rest is just software. And reversing. I have a lot of reversing ahead of me, as I now have dumps of LV0 and LV1. I’ve also dumped the NAND without removing it or a modchip.

3 years, 2 months, 11 days…thats a pretty secure system

Took 5 weeks, 3 in Boston, 2 here, very simple hardware cleverly applied, and some not so simple software.

Shout out to George Kharrat from iPhoneMod Brasil for giving me this PS3 a year and a half ago to hack. Sorry it took me so long :)

As far as the exploit goes, I’m not revealing it yet. The theory isn’t really patchable, but they can make implementations much harder. Also, for obvious reasons I can’t post dumps. I’m hoping to find the decryption keys and post them, but they may be embedded in hardware. Hopefully keys are setup like the iPhone’s KBAG.

Global Agenda tier one and tier two blueprints revealed

Published by under Uncategorized

Craftable loot is always important business, and in Global Agenda it’s no different. There are always some neat surprises waiting for those who are willing to gather some items, do some research, and get to work in the fabrication chambers.

Xzaph over at the HexAgenda fansite has put together a pretty comprehensive screenshot list of Global Agenda’s tier one and tier two blueprint offerings, confirming that there are a few more tricks in those crafting recipes than people have believed. Did you know that you can craft yourself a small squadron of androids to watch your back as pets, or put together a mini-nuke to completely wipe away any resistance within 200 feet?

Beyond being able to build those types of tricks in battle, it seems that there’s also an item that must be crafted before your agency can take over a specific region — the Sovereign Forge — which may lead to us seeing more “key” items appearing down the road in Alliance vs. Alliance, should the Forge work out.

The Daily Grind: Do double exp weekends draw you in?

Published by under Uncategorized

Last weekend, EverQuest II just finished up with a double experience weekend while this weekend we can look forward to Aion hosting one on their servers. Double experience weekends seem to be a new trend in the industry — a marketing opportunity that gives players a reason to pull out their characters and drop in on the weekend for a good time and some quick levels.

So with all of these double experience offers being flung around, we wanted to get your take on these level up weekends. Do they draw you back into playing a game that you’re not currently addicted to? Do they get you to play on the weekend when you normally wouldn’t touch your computer? Or are they something you ignore completely, only taking advantage of by accident when you happen to log on during one of these special events?

Take out your fingers, place them on the keyboard and start typing. When you’re done with your thoughts, slap that “submit” button, stand up, and scream “I HAVE AN OPINION!!!!!” like He-Man has the power.

Nomura “No FFVII Remake Yet, Cloud Could Make Another Appearance”

Published by under Uncategorized

In the most recent Famitsu, there is a special tribute to Final Fantasy VII’s main character, Cloud Strife. It showed images of all the games he was in and his cameo appearances etc. There was a short discussion with his creater, Tetsuya Nomura who concluded that FFVII Remake is not being developed at this time. He really wants to do it, and he is aware that the fans want it as well, but “as of right now, development has not started rolling.”

However he added that it is very possible that Cloud with guest-star in another game in the near future, in a similar way to how he was featured in Dissidia.

One could conclude by Nomura’s words….FFVII is just a matter of time. It sounds as if it 100% is happening, just not yet.

We do know Nomura is working on several other games at this time.

The failure of the beta defense

Published by under Uncategorized

There are always people willing to defend a game, no matter what its flaws. You could have a game where the fundamental means of communication was broken for two months straight, and it would still have fans piping up and explaining why that isn’t such a big deal. But with one high-profile game (Star Trek Online) finishing its beta, and several others slated to finish or start theirs, one of the classic defenses for a game’s problems is losing much of its strengths: “well, it’s still in beta.”

Some of you may well recall our recent feature on betas, in which several developers alternately lamented and stated that the “open beta” is now essentially nothing more than a preview. Bio Break expounds on this point, noting that more often than not the defense of “it’s just a beta” would only be valid if there was some large launch-day patch on deck to fix everything. Those patches, it’s worth noting, occupy the same space as unicorns and fairies.

Broken parts of a game in open beta, more often than not, now mean that there will be something broken in the game at launch. That doesn’t mean that the developers aren’t working on fixing things, but it does mean that defending the beta as sacrosanct is lacking validity.
