EVE Online blogger Morphisat recently unearthed a good video tutorial on the profession of exploration, by a player called SRRAE. In a vast, open galaxy like EVE Online’s setting of New Eden, the option of becoming an explorer is an appealing one. However, despite the name ‘exploration,’ players cannot actually discover new solar systems. They can, however, find hidden content throughout space, both in highsec and lowsec. This can include hidden asteroid belts (presumably with rarer ores to mine), hacking and archaeology sites, harvestable gas clouds used in drug production, and numerous combat encounters.

Admittedly, exploration is not an easy profession to pick up for beginners, but with enough skills related to scanning and covert ops, paired with a decent understanding of game mechanics and the value of a cloaking device, exploration can be lucrative — particularly in 0.0 space. Of course, there will inevitably be times where an explorer is simply burning off scan probes in the futile hope of finding something new. Perhaps SRRAE has become a victim of his own success, as he recently lamented the downside of exploration’s growing popularity among New Eden’s capsuleers.

Jadefury, also known as Leiah, writer of the World of Feedback blog, has fast become one of the most recognizable names in Deathknighting of those following the Wrath Beta. Among his contributions have been 2 videos that showcase the leveling playstyle of Unholy and Blood trees. They’re definitely worth a watch for anyone who’s seriously thinking of playing a Death Knight in Wrath of the Lich King.
The Unholy video, shown above, uses this spec. It actually relies quite heavily on two Blood talents: Butchery and Vendetta. Those 2 talents provide the Death Knight with health and runic power after every mob death, which helps power Corpse Explosions and allows the Death Knight to stand up to lots of monsters at once. Jadefury also shows the power of Death and Decay, Lichborne, and Bone Armor, and even throws in an exploding Ghoul or two, following it all up with a showcase of the awesome Death Gate animation.
I have to admit that I have some concern that this style of AE farming won’t be viable for Death Knights everywhere, since in this video, he relied extensively on getting Runic Power via Vendetta due to quick kills on the low HP slimes in the Pools of Aggonar. On the other hand, it looks like a lot of fun, and solidifies my personal resolve to try an Unholy build first.
After the break, we’ll watch the Blood video.

Over a year and a half ago, Moriash Moreau, then a team member of McDunnough’s Relay Gang for the Second Life Relay for Life, created a contraption that would let him walk virtually using his real body. Channeling MacGyver, he used a treadmill, a butchered USB keyboard, and assorted spare parts to enable him to participate in a whole new way! He even outlined the steps from start to finish on his website. Set to music by Torley Linden, he documented his test journey using popular sims throughout the grid to make sure that his method worked properly. In the end, he walked a whopping 23 miles, or 84 kilometers in Second Life!

With SLRFL08 coming to a close, we’ll have some interviews and statistics available to you soon, so stay tuned!

<![CDATA[WoW Moviewatch: Anasterian, King.]]> http://www.mmoclerks.com/2008/07/20/wow-moviewatch-anasterian-king/ 2008-07-20T17:00:00Z 2008-07-20T17:00:00Z Filed under: ,

We interrupt your regularly scheduled Moviewatch to bring you this special broadcast from inside the mind of Gnomechewer. In Anasterian, King., he ponders what would happen if Anasterian Sunstrider came back. In the machinima he made to reflect Anasterian’s return, he doesn’t even cover half of the storyline that he envisioned.

We’re amazed at the level of creativity involved in Gnomechewer’s short productions. We only wish that he’d focus on one idea and either create a longer video, or a series. With that said, his use of CrazyTalk as well as other advanced programs only enhance his work, which continues to make him a crowd favorite.

If you have any suggestions for WoW Moviewatch, you can mail them to us at machinima AT wowinsider DOT com.

<![CDATA[The No-Shows of E3 [Awol]]]> http://www.mmoclerks.com/2008/07/20/the-no-shows-of-e3-awol/ 2008-07-20T16:00:00Z 2008-07-20T16:00:00Z British Gaming Blog takes a look at the highly anticipated games that weren’t demoed at E3, and the titles would form an impressive show unto themselves. If only. All Points Bulletin. Tekken 6. Indiana Jones and, I mean really Ubisoft, no Beyond Good and Evil 2? Quoth BGB:

UbiDays 2008, Ubisoft announce Beyond Good and Evil 2 with an enigmatic, minimalist trailer. The fans go wild. E3 2008, Ubisoft announce Party Babies for Wii. Girls aged 5-12 go wild.

Agreed. Probably the biggest no-show of the whole conference, the Bungie/Halo game fiasco notwithstanding.

<![CDATA[Sears uses virtual worlds for back-to-school marketing strategy]]> http://www.mmoclerks.com/2008/07/20/sears-uses-virtual-worlds-for-back-to-school-marketing-strategy/ 2008-07-20T16:00:00Z 2008-07-20T16:00:00Z Filed under: , , , , ,

Summer vacation is setting fast. Soon school classrooms will fill back up with eager students looking to display their latest duds and focus on buffing their intelligence. Shopping has to ensue before that big first day back, and Sears and coolness don’t go together nor is it the likely first shopping choice. That’s not preventing their marketing department from attempting to target teens in the back-to-school spending craze. Sears has a new strategy which is to promote their products and brand name through social networks and virtual worlds frequently inhabited by teens and kids.

The new virtual Sears fronts are endless arriving all across the Metaverse. A fashion event will he held in the Sears virtual store in Zwinky’s Zwinchester Mall. 3d avatar creator Meez also has Sears B-T-S boutique offering clothing, backgrounds, and animations. Additional promotions will run across Alloy. The Gofish network will be hosting a runway contest in the Cartoon Doll Emporium and also at WeeWorld. Another Sears shop is present in Poptropica and The-N.com. NeoPets has some virtual Sears’s goodies in their summer faire event. If that wears you out, Sears wants everyone to lounge around. It’s commercial fun for the whole family, well not this blogger. Nonetheless, it’s still interesting to see the searing crossover.

<![CDATA[Enhancement shamans, now 50% more huntery]]> http://www.mmoclerks.com/2008/07/20/enhancement-shamans-now-50-more-huntery/ 2008-07-20T16:00:00Z 2008-07-20T16:00:00Z Filed under: , , , ,

Yes, I know ‘huntery’ isn’t a word.

Tipster Korgak sent in a piece of news from the Wrath Shaman forums: shamans now get AP from agility. To quote Blue poster Koraa:

  • Sorry about that, it should of been in the patch notes. The idea is for DPS mail (with AGI and AP) to be viable for both Hunters and Shaman. Strength is mostly now only a stat for Death Knights, Warriors and Ret Paladins.

While this won’t immediately take shamans out of wearing leather for their enhancement DPS needs, it does make the leather that feral druids wear less attractive. Rogue leather, which tends to have agi, attack power and crit will still be fairly attractive, but now all that mail that has stats for hunters will look a lot more appealing to our melee branch of the best class in the game. One depressing note seems to be that our agility to crit formulas seem to have changed negatively as well, most likely because we’re expected to push agility more than currently.

(Thanks again to Korgak for the tip)

<![CDATA[Soulcalibur IV Breaks Street Part II: Gameplay Video [Not A Gametrailers World Exclusive]]]> http://www.mmoclerks.com/2008/07/20/soulcalibur-iv-breaks-street-part-ii-gameplay-video-not-a-gametrailers-world-exclusive/ 2008-07-20T15:00:00Z 2008-07-20T15:00:00Z Yesterday we posted pictures of guys who got their hands on Soulcalibur IV, 10 days before its release date of July 29. Today, we have video. I guess you can just walk into any store and ask them to break the street date and get your game. Here’s Yoda vs. Ivy, Yoda taking it 4-1 with a lot of button mashing and bad camera work. If the game looks repetitive, I think these guys’ admittedly bad technique (” I hadn’t played a Soul Calibur title since Soul Calibur 2 a couple years ago, so our match is pretty bad.”) might be to blame, not the game. If any of you manage to snag this, we’d appreciate a more informed breakdown of gameplay in the comments.

<![CDATA[E308: Social networking and web-games in Free Realms]]> http://www.mmoclerks.com/2008/07/20/e308-social-networking-and-web-games-in-free-realms/ 2008-07-20T15:00:00Z 2008-07-20T15:00:00Z Filed under: , , ,

For a game that’s not actually browser-based (though it will only require a small download and stream content in the background, Free Realms is a client-based game), Free Realms will have an unprecedented amount of browser-based content. Free Realms will have all of the web content you would expect from a modern MMO… and some of the web content you would expect to see in a social networking application like Facebook. Each player will have an online player profile listing all of their in-game friends (with links that will launch the game client and take you right to your friends’ location) and newsfeeds that give you information about what’s going on with your character. Not even Free Realms‘ game elements are restricted to the client. Many mini-games will also be playable via the web — and give you in-game benefits for doing so (as long as you’re logged on). So if you played the Bejeweled-esque mini-game via the web during your lunch break, your character in-game would gain ore and experience.

In-game, characters will connect through a non-traditional guild system. When we asked Lead Designer Laralyn McWilliams about guilds at E3, she informed us that SOE is “exploring other kinds of social arrangements, like different types of friends. So you could have your BFFs, your regular friends, and your family.” They’re also exploring a “club” system. McWilliams said, “Guilds are exclusive — so we’d like to really recognize the fact that someone might want to be in the gardening club and the dog-lover’s club and the ninja club. Those would all have collections associated with them because Free Realms is ultimately a collection. There’s a collection of jobs, a collection of clubs… we’re all about letting you collect things in the game and show off your achievements.”

Our non-combat pets have been abused for too long. They’ve been starved, drowned, trampled, left in banks for years, and shoved into a backpack with angry, incontinent nightsabers. Now, at last, they shall have their revenge. After gorging himself on Papa Hummel’s Old-Fashioned Pet Biscuits and slipping some Noggenfogger Elixir into his master’s evening tea, this formerly servile Sinister Squashling had Dunamus of Kul Tiras begging for his pathetic life. Feed me, Seymour!

Do you have any unusual World of Warcraft images that are just collecting dust in your screenshots folder? We’d love to see it on Around Azeroth! Sharing your screenshot is as simple as e-mailing aroundazeroth@wowinsider.com with a copy of your shot and a brief explanation of the scene. You could be featured here next!

Remember to include your player name, server and/or guild if you want it mentioned. We prefer full screen shots without the UI showing — use alt-Z to remove it. Please, no more sunsets.
